Acrylic paint

It is a fast-drying, water-based paint.  It is commonly used for walls and ceilings.  It is relatively easy to work with and brushes etc. can be cleaned with water.

Enamel paint

These are oil-based paints, often used for timber and metalwork.  It delivers a tough, glossy finish.  It takes long to dry (often overnight), and brushes etc. must be cleaned with a solvent.

Undercoat

This prepares the surface for the topcoat.  It helps with paint adhesion, it improves the topcoat coverage and it ensures a good finish.

Primer

A primer seals the surface that is going to be painted and binds the paint onto it.  Different primers are available for different surfaces, e.g. plaster primer, wood primer or metal primer.

Bonding liquid

Bonding liquid is used on friable and porous surfaces, for example raw brick and filled cracks, to ensure the paint sticks to the surface.

Matt finish

A matt finish does not shine.  It is often used for ceilings.

Satin & low sheen

This is sometimes referred to as eggshell and is often used for most walls.
